First thing that we should know is that calories that come from alcohol are “empty calories.” Empty means not having any nutritional value whatsoever. Most foods, like fruits and vegetables, meats, and grains provide nutritional value. They can supply us with protein, carbohydrates, and fat. We can also get some vitamins and minerals from eating them.  Alcoholic beverages on the other have none of those. It is true that red wine has antioxidants in them, but the alcohol itself is useless nutritionally.

Second, alcohol holds around 7 calories per gram. If you drink mixed drinks, you may compound the amount of calories you consume because of all the sugar in the form of juice, tonic, soda pop, and syrup in these beverages.

Third, it is crucial to remember that alcohol metabolizes differently in your body than the macronutrients (carbs, protein, and fat). Too much alcohol slows fat burning.  When the alcohol is drunk with a meal, the body uses energy from alcohol first before the energy from the food.

The human body cannot store alcohol. Your body uses it as acetate so that it could use it as an energy. This causes to delay metabolizing the food  eaten, leading to calorie storage for later use. To make it clear, your body store body fat on the belly.

Many believe that if you want to drink alcohol you should drink it with a meal. Whether or not you believe that advice, just remember that when you drink alcohol, you also add calories.

What should we do about it? First, decide whether you drink or not. If you need to lose weight, it might be better abstain. If you just have to have your alcohol, limit yourself to one serving per day. Most importantly, know how many calories you are consuming and do not exceed your caloric goals. Finally, make sure you are getting plenty of fat burning exercise and drinking plenty of water.
