Family in Patagonia introduces smoothies to their gym members

Smoothies and fitness is not something you would want to combine if you want to get the body of your dreams. Because those two doesn’t, well, at least, that is what we have been thought by our trainers since too much sugar in your body is not something that would give out a perfect body since it is the stuff that makes fat.

Well, in Patagoni, there is a family that believes that you should combine those two be fit. They even make a business out of it and it is very hit among gym goers in Patagonia.

The unique gym-smoothie spot is the brainchild of Patagonians Todd and Starr Norton, who decided to open shop in October 2017 after hearing that many people were struggling to commit to working out with no full-service gym in the Patagonia-Sonoita area.

What is a smoothie?

A smoothie (occasionally spelled smoothee or smoothy) is a thick beverage made from blended raw fruit, vegetables or ice cream and cookies with other ingredients such as water, ice, or sweeteners.

There area has almost all sorts of gym as those who live there can go to yoga, Pilates and regular gym. Patagonia Health and Fitness offers weight and cardio equipment, plus group workout, Zumba and yoga classes, during flexible hours. A massage studio has been added and a hair salon is planned for the near future.

The business is very successful as the local people in the area like the idea of eating healthy and working out.

The secret to their success if the concept of positive, family-friendly vibe.

“A lot of people have hesitation going to the gym where you feel like people are going to be looking you up and down and judging you,” Todd Norton said. “Our goal is to get people where we all understand that (we all) have flaws and that’s the reason we’re here is to work on those. We have something in common.”

And just as they wanted to open a gym to fill a void, the Nortons decided to open The Groovy Smoothie due to the lack of smoothie-specific shops in Nogales or the Patagonia area.

“We spent months creating smoothies, tasting them and sometimes dumping them out because you’re like, ‘Oh, that was not good,’” Starr Norton said with a laugh.

The Groovy Smoothie offers healthy fruit-based treats like the Sonoran Sunrise and Purple Nurple, as well as more decadent frozen yogurt-based drinks like the BananaColada Froyo and an apple pie-flavored smoothie. Patrons can add ingredients such as matcha green tea, chia seeds, whey protein and “super greens” like wheat grass and acai.
