People who engage in exercise and diet want instant results. Some of them are able to achieve their goal while others are not. Wanting to lose weight is not something that is not guaranteed because there are many temptations on the way. And most people are too very weak to overcome temptations. If only there is a way to tell if a program will work for you, would it be easier to decide whether you should keep on with your program or not?

Biomarkers can determine if something will work for you

Luckily for you, a new study claims that there is such a way, scientists are now aware of five epigenetic biomarkers in teenagers that were linked with a better weight loss at the start of a weight loss program. This new finding can help determine if a program is effective for you or not.

Amelia Martí, Ph.D., Pharm. D., co-author of this study and a professor of a university in Spain said that acting early about obesity while young can help you reduce your morbidity rate later on your life. Scientist need to find new markers that would help people to lose weight. The new finding include five putative epigenetic biomarkers that could be use to predict the response to a weight loss intervention in obese teenagers.

For the study, Martí together with her associates first performed a global methylation assay in 24 teenagers who got the best and worst reaction about the EVASYON weight loss program, and added 83 more adolescents. Researchers assessed an epigenetic marker, DNA methylation levels, in obese teens that come from a blood sample at baseline and again at the end of the 10-week program. Researchers divided the participants into two groups based on the amount of weight they lose.

What the researchers discovered is that the baseline DNA methylation levels of five epigenetic markers were closely linked with better weight loss response. EVASYON program is a lifestyle and nutritional educational weight loss program, which includes a multidisciplinary team of nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists and pediatricians. The program was carried out in five Spanish cities: Granada, Madrid, Pamplona, Santander and Zaragoza.

Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of a well-known fitness known magazine concludes that the reason why some people are successful with their weight loss program and others are not is because of the genes they possess.
